Project Name: „Novel technetium (99Mo/99mTc) generator with chitosan-based micro-porous sorbent
using molybdenum 99Mo for applications in radionuclide diagnostics” (acronym: BIOTECHNET)
PROJECT CO-FINANCED FROM NATIONAL CENTRE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN POLAND
On December 15, 2015 Perma-Fix Medical S.A. signed the agreement (Agreement No STRATEGMED2/269080/8/NCBR/2015)
with National Centre for Research and Development in Poland concerning co-financing of the project to a
consortium Perma-Fix Medical S.A. led for further development and commercialization of a novel prototype
generator for the production of Technetium-99m (“Tc-99m”) for use in cancer and cardiac imaging
and radionuclide diagnostics (“Generator Project”).
The grant was awarded under framework of the second contest for strategic program for scientific research
and development work „Prevention practices and treatment of civilization diseases - STRATEGMED”
in Poland.
The main goal of the project is to develop the novel prototype generator with micro-porous resin to produce
molybdenum-derived Tc-99m, test the chemical and radionuclide purities of effluent containing the Tc-99m
isotope and verify the performance of the final product, which will be the cancer and cardiac pharmaceutical
kits used during animal and human imaging to fulfill both Polish and European Pharmacopoeia standards.
The project consortium under the leadership of Perma-Fix Medical S.A. consists of the following entities:
- National Centre for Nuclear Research - Radioisotope Centre POLATOM in Otwock;
- Institute for Biopolimers and Chemical Fibers - Department of Biopolimers in Łódź;
- Warsaw Medical University - Department of Nuclear Administration
- Institute of Industrial Organic Chemistry Branch in Pszczyna.
The total Generator Project budget is approximately 13 290 597 PLN (USD $3.7M).
Generator Project grant subsidies allocated to the project team total 10 023 748 PLN (USD $2.8M), of which
Perma-Fix Medical S.A. will receive 2 934 970 PLN (USD $0.8M) and the remaining amount will be allocated to
other members of the Generator Project team to support technology development and testing.
The implementation period for Generator Project is 36 months, from June 1, 2015 to May 30, 2018.
The research phase is conducted from June 1, 2015 to February 29, 2018 and the preparation for
implementation phase will be executed from March 1, 2017 to May 30, 2018.
